Built in 1907 for the First National Bank of Elizabeth, which became the Elizabeth State Bank after 1914, the building at 188 South Main was the town’s only bank from 1909 until 1933 and is the anchor of the historic block. It then housed community groups and businesses, the American Legion among them from 1940 to 1977, and its original vault is still in place. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. It now holds a business rather than a bank; look at it from the street.
The history was read in the Historic Advisory Board’s Historic Properties Directory on 30 October 2026, and the business at 188 S Main in the Elizabeth Main Street Program’s directory the same day.
